Prana - or Psychic Energy

Spiritual and occult teachers explain that in the air and in the food and water we consume there is a substance from which all activity, vitality and life is derived. The Hindu yogi masters call this substance 'Prana' and in the west it has been called, nerve-force, life-force or vital-force. People often talk of psychic energy in a vague way but it is nerve-force prana, directed by the mind in unusual ways.

Introduction

Prana is the essence of all motion, force and energy in the Universe. It is absolute energy. Every atom is energised by prana and every living thing must absorb the type of prana known as nerve-force, life-force or vital force prana to survive and grow.

What is Prana?

Occult science and spiritual philosophy teaches that life is in all things not just plants and creatures but in every atom, in everything that exists. Prana is Universal Energy, it is the energy principle of all life. Prana is in all forms of matter and yet it is not matter it is the force which animates matter.

A special manifestation of prana that occultists call 'life-force' or 'vital-force' exists in the air. Fresh air, through which sunlight has passed, is charged fully with life-force prana. Life-force prana is constantly absorbed by all living things, by single cells, by plant life and animal life. Living plants and creatures need to absorb life-force prana.

Prana is used by and responds to the demands of your unconscious mind.
Prana can be directed to parts of your body and to other people by your mind.

Western science can find no chemical trace of prana and, as yet, no trace of it registers on scientific instruments. One day, Western science will know more of this Universal essence of all energy. It is the essence of motion, force, gravity, electricity and all forms of life, from the highest to the lowest.

However, it is known instinctively by all that the air in certain places has a greater amount of "something" that vitalises and brings health to sick people. Doctors advise the sick to seek "fresh air" away from "industrial areas" which acts as a tonic to the body and mind. The "fresh air" is beneficially as it is fully charged with life-force prana.

Prana Distribution in the Body

Lungs:
Life-force prana is absorbed into the body by the lungs during breathing. Inhaling draws in fresh life-force prana. Ordinary breathing absorbs a normal supply of prana but controlled full rhythmic breathing absorbs a far greater supply of prana which is stored away in the brain and nerve centres.

Nervous System: Life-force prana is distributed throughout the body by the nervous system. For this reason it is also known as nerve-force. Throughout the body there are points where nerves meet, the nerve plexuses or great centres of nervous activity, masses of nervous matter known as ganglia. Prana life-force is stored at these nerve centres and in the brain.

A major nerve centre is found just behind the pit of the stomach; occult and spiritual teachers know this as the 'solar plexus', a most important part of the nervous system. It is the major storehouse of life- force prana, supplying all the major organs of the body and the upper brain.

Brain: The brain is a great mass of nerve tissue and directs the use and flow of life-force prana that is used in intellectual activity and muscle control. Occultists consider that the brain in your skull is not the only "brain of the body". The solar plexus is also a mass of nervous tissue acting independently as a kind of "abdominal brain". Inhaling absorbs life-force prana firstly into the solar plexus, during exhalation it is then distributed throughout the body.

Food and drink: All that you eat and drink is also a source of life-force prana. More details how to absorb even more prana by your eating and drinking will be given in other areas of this site.

Use of Prana in the body

Movement: Every movement of the body, from the quiver of an eye-lash to the mighty effort of an athlete, requires nerve signals, i.e. nerve-force, to be sent from the brain or other nerve centre to the muscles. Every step we take, every word spoken, every breath and every heart beat uses up a certain amount of nerve force or life-force prana.

Thinking: Our thoughts are complex systems of nerve impulses within the brain, each thought uses up an amount of nerve force. Worry, fear, deep concentration leads the brain into intense activity which uses nerve force more rapidly, this is partly why we feel fatigued or drained after such periods of brain activity.

Feeling: We receive feelings from our senses, like the sense of touch, and feelings in the form of emotions like an uneasy feeling we can get in the stomach. Feelings are nerve impulses which travel along the cable-like nervous system to the brain. Every nerve impulse, we have millions of them every second, uses up some of the life-force prana.

Will power: Will power is a most amazing thing, there will be a whole section in this site about this subject alone. By will power you can direct the action of muscles and your thoughts. With practice you can by will power direct extra life-force prana to any part of your body or in fact outside of the body. For now all I will say is that the ability of your mind to "will" something uses up life-force prana.

Spiritual Development: Using the mind for spiritual and psychic purposes uses different areas of the brain and requires an adequate supply of nerve force. When learning anything new it takes extra effort, the same applies to spiritual development, in the beginning you need loads of life-force prana to help unfold your spirituality.

Proper breathing absorbs and store away a plentiful supply of prana so when you come to do spiritual work you will have plenty available to achieve the wonderful result possible. Take a look at my 'Proper Breathing exercise page.'

Prana Energy and Spiritual Powers

The purpose of proper complete breathing is to absorb and store more life-force prana so that when you do spiritual work there is plenty available.

More prana helps because spiritual work uses different areas of your brain and a plentiful supply of it is needed, especially in the early stages when these areas of the brain are awakening.

Extra life-force prana is required because learning anything new at first takes extra effort.

Healing, telepathy and directing the forces called 'psychic, occult or spiritual', sends out life-force prana so you need extra supplies.

With plenty of life-force prana, the mind distributes it readily throughout the body and to areas of particular need. With plenty of prana available certain spiritual powers and forces become available to you.

A health and healing effect: A body full of life-force prana will be more healthy and full of vitality. You will radiate a type of energy, human magnetism, so that others coming close to you will feel the healthy outpouring that can leap from your nervous system to theirs. There will be a more in my website about how to do healing.

Strengthen Aura: With plenty of life-force prana within the nervous system your aura is strengthen and takes on a more energetic appearance to those who can see it. See my aura page for more information about auras.

Telepathy: Your thoughts have an energy to them that can travel extremely fast and great distances. With the addition of life-force prana to your thoughts they have much greater strength and energy and this is how powers of thought transfer or telepathy can be very much improved.

Altered consciousness and astral travel: These aspects of spiritual interest require life-force prana to be directed in specific ways. There will be more about this in this website.
